Photography
Here is where I shall showcase a few of my favourite photos from some of my various albums. If you'd like a full resolution copy or print of any photos then please use the contact page to get in touch. More information about this can be found on the licensing page. Below is a little information about how I got into photography, the equipment I have and where I would like to take my hobby.
I'd always been interested in photography, spending a great amount of time through my early teens playing with an Olympus OM-2 learning and appreciating proper photography. However it took a backseat to other interests during high school especially as budget didn't allow me to buy a similarly capable digital camera and I didn't really want to compromise on the features of the Olympus.
Midway through my second year I decided to buy a digital camera for use in Oxford that wasn't too expensive but with plenty of manual control to tide me over until I had the time and money to enjoy a digital SLR. In the Christmas sale I found a Panasonic Lumix FZ-20 for £200, which had all the manual control that I was used to along with a fixed lens equivalent to 36-432mm that was developed jointly with Leica using their quality assurance and measurement instruments. I think it's a great camera and have taken literally thousands of photos with it, particularly sports photos utilising the large optical zoom. However, when I got to try creative photography with it, it became obvious very quickly that the small sensor size and fixed lens were very limited compared to an SLR. The 6mm sensor makes it impossible to create a really tight depth of field and fast moving subjects are susceptible to a red fringe around them, particularly at high zoom. I currently use this almost exclusively and all photos on this site were taken with it with very little or no editing.
In a few years I intend to move back to SLR, almost certainly dSLR but it won't be until I can get a full-frame camera as opposed to an APS-C camera for around £1000-1200. If I were looking to buy now then I think I'd go for the Canon EOS 5D with a couple of lenses ranging from around 18mm to 400mm. Hopefully it won't be too many years until I can afford such a camera as well as the travelling costs to make use of it around the world.
